Today, out of the blue, he received a letter from Wonga debt collectors chasing him for £258 with nothing to back up the claim. Please can anyone offer advice as to how to deal with this situation - thanks.

The debt collector will have a detailed set of information.
Clinton is Clinton. I have known him for a long time, I know his mother... Simon Jordan |

If he paid it off don't worry. Just call them up to tell them they have made a mistake. Be helpful too to have some evidence of payment at hand when you do. We are forever getting debt recovery letters from various places to someone who must have lived in our house many years ago and I ring the companies up sometimes to tell them. They have always been pleasant about it and appear to have taken appropriate action. But the months later another letter from another company arrives... If anyone knows a Nigel G who used to live in Dartmouth tell him he is a cvnt.

Your son should have had some paperwork from Wonga in 2013 stating he had paid off the the loan and they had closed his account. If that was not the case what if any correspondence did they send him? If he doesn't have any ask them how this debt figure of £258.00 has arisen and why write to him now about it? Originally posted by headliner

Thanks - we know we cleared the old outstanding balance 2 or 3 years ago but didn't keep any record of it to offer as proof. We will ask them to provide details of the £258 as they can't just send a letter with an amount of money on it and expect it to be paid!

Yes, we should have received something from them back in 2013 but whether we did or not, I'm not sure, given so much time has passed. I seem to remember that he just phoned them up to clear the balance on their letter but I don't recall them sending any further written confirmation.

The Financial Ombudsman Service will be a better place to try. But they'll only get involved once Wonga have been given chance to sort their act out. Make a formal complaint to Wonga first.

Are they collecting something that has been paid or have they found a "fee" deom somewhere?

Lots of good advice on here to which I would add keep a note of any conversations that you have with Wonga and the debt collectors. When phoned and what was agreed.
