I didn't realise that Dennis's sister Norma was Jimmy Nail's sister in real life. I wonder what happened to Jimmy Nail as he was flavour of the month for ages with Crocodile Shoes and Spender plus a couple of hit records and then he just vanished

Interesting to note: Timothy Spall, who played Barry is a big Palace fan, as is his famous son Rafe.

One of my favourite series, got two box sets and might just get them out!But the editing thing is spot on, it was bad back in the day, jumpinmg from opne scene to another, I imagine it hasn"t got any better with time! The first series in Germany was great, and also the second series in spain. Always remember, it was the time of pavement jobs on a thursday lunchtime over here-most securicor vans delivered cash to sites on a thursday, and a gang of big time robbers had fled to Spain. Barry was reading the sun, in a bar, and all you could see was a tattoed arm next to him at the bar, the headline was about the bank job and had a pic of a suspect. Barry said to the bloke drinking, i"d hang him or something of the like, "what mate?", said the bloke. "I"d hang him," says gormless Barry, the music started rolling, the camera cut to the paper mug shot, then slowly up the mans arm to his face, and it was the same bloke! Priceless. They did spoil it by doing another two series 20 years later, in South America I think, and had their sons involved, less Wayne who died of a heroin overdose, but Pat Roach was still alive, but it was crap. Series one and two, then end of.

They were too plot heavy and not enough about the characters.

A classic, but yes it was definitely a bit makeshift and hasn't exactly aged well visually. Some well drawn, gritty characters though. Personally I didn't actually mind the last two series (obviously not a patch on the original series' but was good to see it back). I love comedy from the 60s-early 90s. Give me a bit of On the Buses, Ever Decreasing Circles, or Reggie Perrin any day of the week.

I enjoy watching some of the old comedies based about working life in britain I watched a series of common as muck about some northern bin men on you tube great series and funny and interesting insight into the UK in the early 90s and how it's changed. Edited by nickyf (18 Sep 2021 9.18am)

I’ve got the first 2 series on box set and if they’ve censored Oz then I wouldn’t bother. He is brilliant and natural, because he was a heavy drinking hooligan who didn’t care, but had a soft side to him.

I was 2 when it came out. Loved it when I saw it in the 90’s- especially Bomber. I always thought the choppy shooting was part of it, it wasn’t supposed to be slick, it was supposed to be unnatural to represent the situation, Edited by robdave2k (17 Sep 2021 9.07pm)

Yeah, the first two were factual at the time, we had loads of builders working in Germany and in the second series, there was a non extradition agreement with Spain, so british criminals fled there, last two series just waffle.
