I don't need to read the book to know that he knew he'd made a terrible decision immediately. It was the most apologetic free kick award I've ever seen. We all make mistakes. He just made one on a near 'Loris Karius' scale of f*** ups. I know everyone loves to hate Clattenburg, but I don't believe there's a conspiracy, he just blew too soon and couldn't undo it. Given how his career fizzled out, it's sad that that could have been Connor Wickham's defining moment. We didn't know it at the time, but both he and Puncheon peaked in that precise match and were downhill to obscurity from there on.
