I get it for seats in the senate, house of representatives but I quite agree, it should be 'highest vote number from the population' makes president. But then she wouldn't have changed the system, nor has any democrat, and the rules she choose to run on, however unfair, are the rules she choose to play by. But I quite agree, it should be on the vote of the people to choose the president, not some arcane system who's practicality has passed its time.

Around 49% of the nation didn't vote. The other was split, along the popular vote, more of less even, around 25% (ish) So arguably the president elect is no one. Astonishing really, that we (UK included) can call ourselves democratic, when you regularly have half the population not sufficiently engaged to vote.

I think she will be taking it hard because it is a significant blow to her ego and means nearly 50% of American voters believed her so unlikeable they would rather vote for Donald Trump. That's pretty damning. But she has never argued about the electoral college. She has never called for it to be ended. She has never questioned its legitimacy. And she has never done so because she thought it would benefit her. The popular vote was always going to be close. Trump was never going to poll below 40%. But she and her team believed they had sufficient college votes to make it virtually impossible for him to win. And on that basis they supported the system and they also ignored or brushed over concerns in key states (primarily the rust belt ones I mentioned). She can't suddenly develop a PR conscience now that she's been burned by the electoral college. Because she and the rest of the Democrats were happy with the electoral college when they thought it was going to benefit them
