I always thought having a referendum was a mistake for it left us, and that of future generations, as hostages to fortune. It is just too important for such a decision to be left to the ignorant, the selfish and the prejudiced. It isn't the way we do things. We elect our representatives to consider all the facts, consult the experts and then come to those decisions for us. If we don't like the direction they take then every 5 years we can change them. The fact that there is a consensus among the politicians, and experts, to remain happens to co-incide with my person opinion is beside the point. This was the biggest political error of my lifetime and only done to neutralise UKIP and the right wing of the Conservative party. If we do vote to leave it will be a shameful day for the UK and one which marks the start of a terminal decline on the world stage. From superpower to no-one in 150 years. We are better than that. We have some great young people, most of whom see the benefits of the EU and are switched on to the modern world and it's global economy. I am hoping that we all come our senses in time and vote to remain. I fear we might not and the xerophobic demagogues of Gove, Johnson Farage et al might win out. Heaven helps us if that happens. For the avoidance of doubt any comments in response to a previous post are directed to its ideas and not at any, or all, posters personally.

This is a chance of a lifteime to prevent our great nation turning into a 'State' of the 'United States of Europe'. We are a great nation capable of making our own laws , governing ourselves, trading with the whole of the world and making decisions in the interests of the UK , NOT in the interests of the EU. Had a leave campaigner come to my door. She didn't know much. I asked her what percentage of UK expenditure went to the EU. She thought it was about 40% she was shocked when I told her it was 1.1. She knew that the UK had voted against 55 pieces of legislation but was shocked to find we had voted for over 2500. I asked how many of the top 100 regulations were down to the EU. She said 95. When I explained that actually out of the 100 95 are pretty much worldwide not from the EU. She was unaware that local fishermen were only awarded 1 third of our quotas because the other 2 thirds were taken by just 3 companies. She started wittering on about regulations for hedgerows.I asked her why she thought we needed regulations. She couldn't answer. So I kindly explained about how they need to be a certain size to help maintain wildlife, ensure they are not too high etc etc. I asked if she trusted Farage, she admitted she thought he's 'a bit racist ' I think I may have changed her mind! She was shocked when I said I didn't know how I was going to vote and might abstain. What this shows is the total ignorance of people as to the real facts behind the EU. If someone canvassing wasn't that informed, What about Joe Public. Then I had a row with the missus. My son asked how we were going to vote. When I said I don't know she said you're not thinking of voting out are you? You have to vote remain. So I'm off to the pub.

If anyone wants to vote to remain and they live in rural areas that haven't had that much EU immigration and they don't know what people are moaning about...take a gander at Wisbech.
