I dunno, I wonder why the ghettos of the US are so full of black people, slavery might have something to do with them being there. The prejudice born from slavery, the racism of Jim Crow laws, the centuarys of discrimination persist across generations.

Things might not be as bad as they once were, but the attitudes, on both sides of the fence, are inherited and take generations to disperse.

I'd imagine being a black man reading about slavery its hard not to be affected, even if its 2014. Remenants of the fortunes built on slavery still persist. Its wishful thinking to believe that people are independent units, rather than products of their cultural influences.

Its unlikely that footballers are sex workers, the wages being pretty decent, but its statistically improbable that there are not gay football players, given the number of clubs, players and leagues in the UK, and number of players (also not forgetting that players have come out after retirement, citing the atmosphere as the reason they didn't come out whilst playing).

There is almost certainly a reason why people are only comfortable coming out after they've quit playing, whilst a young diving medalist can come out.

You can't say that black people can't be upset about slavery because "it happened ages ago" and then use a book of religious bulls*** that's even older than slavery to decry homosexuality.

The after effects of colonialism and slavery - which go hand in hand - are still felt strongly that's why. Setting up the future Tribe v Tribe to rule something called a 'country'. A concept which only appeared once the Europeans arrived with their soldiers and put down lines in sand and jungle and partitioned the place as they were pillaging.

We and others - Belgium especially - shat on Africa for nearly 200 years. Fairly recent history considering some were saying goodbye to their 'masters' up until the 1970's.
