I have never really understood the need to insult people. Obviously, interpersonal skills are not everyone's strength but it does seem little to ask of a politician to be careful in what they say. That is kind of their job. I'm not so keen on digging up things people said 15 years ago in a different environment and retrospectively punishing them for it.
