Well, certainly to downplay the Holocaust or to try to create some sort of league table of genocide or cruelty is offensive and stupid, but the fact that Jews originating from the Middle East are largely genetically similar does not make a religion a race. I'm sure even the blondest Jews would have ended up in the gas chamber had they been discovered, although, I suppose, it is easier to identify your chosen enemy if they all look alike.

My neighbour is 91 and born in Germany, she showed me her school photo of when she was 11. It was the photo required to prove she wasn't a Jew and allowed her to attend Secondary school. Luckily for her she didn't look Jewish unfortunately some of her relatives weren't so lucky and died in the camps. She had me in tears when she told me about what happened to some of her family.

Exactly. We can split hairs about definitions, but that doesn't mean an awful lot where atrocities result. As has been said, far right types appear to have very little trouble differentiating themselves from Jews. And Nazis were very racially geared. Those in these groups to an extent in part define themselves, and very strict, unchanging definitions of race have an expiry date on them anyway in a fast paced, connected world.

Oh the JQ....fraught with danger. If you don't adhere to strict interpretations the weight of the mainstream will come squarely down on your backside.....As Goldberg is finding out....though her millionaire victimhood 'protected characteristics' will spare her the job. Of course the holocaust was race based, in the thirties the Nazis passed laws that were entirely based upon race that allowed it to be set up. Goldberg probably doesn't know that. She should have the right to air her views and for it to be debated....but I note that the time she lives in isn't interested. A very good point. It seems as though there is real ambiguity around the definitions or understanding of race, culture, heritage and experience for some people. Nicely articulated BJ (noting hilarious acronym there) with regards to results/consequences of an insistence on categorisation being of far more importance. A bit off topic, and just a thought not an academic proposal, but it occurs to me that those so desperately seeking to categorise themselves often do so with an intentional, or perhaps unintentional consequence of categorising and consequentially persecuting others.
