I agree bout same starting 11, i disagree bout bringing Luka straight back in if Kouyate' injury keeps him out. We still have Meyer(i know) Jairo, Townsend, shlupp(?), Luka is 1(one) booking away from a min 2 match ban, do we need to take a chance? PvA's set pieces & corners were far superior to Luka's, as was Jmac2's something we've been sadly lacking in for ages. Our need to win against the 'seaweed' is paramount in any/every Palace's fans mindset. Luka should not be involed . . IMHO
This operation, will make the 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' seem like a simple military exercise. |

He likes to pick the same old faces every game irrespective of who the opposition is and who's in form so I'd be surprised if Luka didn't get his place back as soon as he is fit.

A splendid performance yesterday.

Hurts me to say it but we are better without Luka. I would leave him out after his suspension.

As has already been said, had he played we wouldn't have seen PvA's free kick goal. If Luka comes back in as captain he'll want to take over that role and will produce his usual (this season) dead-ball dross.

Not so sure about that as the free kick from that position favoured a left-footer.

Unfortunately, Roy has his favourites and I suspect Luka will go straight back into the team. Jairo was doing a decent job at LB, but as soon as PVA was fit again, he was out. There should be competition for places, not automatic selection. Which would mean Benteke is out. I accept that Riedewald did a decent job at left-back and surpassed expectations but PVA is a natural left-back with greater experience in this position, has scored goals from open-play and as we witnessed on Saturday has the ability to score from free-kicks.I understand Hodgson's rationale for bring PVA back into the side at the expense of Riedewald.

If Luka played we probably wouldn’t have had the free kick because one player difference would mean the ball would go to different player or position at least once. It’s also the same when people say ‘we could’ve scored 4 or be 4 nil up’ when the ball would have been placed for a kick off after one goal meaning those next chances couldn’t have happened and and the dynamics on the pitch change after a goal. Sorry to be a pedantic pr1ck. I agree with what you mean and Luka has been a really frustrating disappointment. And we were arguing that whether we should or shouldn’t sell him for £20mil not long ago. Last summer wasn’t it? We’d snap anyone’s arm off for that deal now.

Luka would not be missed. PVA takes a good penalty should we get one, also better corners and as we saw on Saturday a decent delivery on free kicks. He is also playing well at the moment gets forward with pace down the channel and links up well with Wilf. Originally posted by doombear

Our corners were much better on Saturday. Indeed, but for Dubravka, we would have scored from one! (By the way, he's a fine keeper and is streets ahead on shots saved this season but perhaps not surprising given how many shots Newcastle allowed us to take).

For example, I simply said that had Luka played we wouldn't have seen PvA's goal. I didn't explain WHY we wouldn't see it. Later in this thread I said that but for Dubravka we would have scored a goal from a corner. I didn't say two goals, because had Cahill's header gone in the whole game would have changed - we might even have lost (although I doubt it given how poor Newcastle were). If onlys in life ae pointless because the whole of life would probably take a different path if the "if only" had occurred.

In this game however Newcastle had only two central midfielders as their set up allowed them to have two marking Zaha constantly. They were therefore outnumbered in centre midfield and it showed. We totally bossed that area throughout the match. I believe we would have done exactly the same if Luka had been playing albeit he might have insisted on taking the set pieces. But that sort of thing is easy to change if someone else is getting better results so it should not be a given that he takes them if he plays. Luka is a stopper and a damn good one at that. He is sort of a mixture of Cabaye and Jedinak although and rather unfortunately for us, does not possess their greatest strengths in abundance. Is he better than Kouyate, McArthur or McArthy, it is very difficult to say. If he doesn't start at Brighton and they begin to dominate the midfield I am sure there will be some who demand his immediate introduction. I don't disagree regarding bossing the midfield but I'm not sure dead-ball duties will be easily changed where the club's captain is involved. I'd like to think so and in some ways I'd like to see it put to the test. similarly, how likely is it that Roy will drop the club captain once he's well again?

He breaks up play and commits a lot of fouls which can be beneficial to our team especially away from home.Since the start of the 2017-18 season he has picked up 30 yellows and a red.
