Didn't a new 5 pound note just come out? Surely easier & cheaper to make a new pound note than a coin.

Coins last about 20 times longer in circulation than the new style of notes. 50 times longer than the old paper ones. So they might be cheaper to print than mint, but you have to keep replacing them far more often.
