I'm not convinced its a political symbol - although it certainly seems to have become one in recent years. I'm a bit concerned that the 'Poppy Morality Police' are co-opting it.

They saw no objection to it in 2011, and as the Dutch commemorate their fallen with a national holiday in May, they have on previous occasions been permitted to change match dates when they coincided. Swastikas, in the sense you mean, are a political statement, therefor would, quite correctly, not be permitted. Black armbands have been regularly worn by all players and officials in international matches to mark the death of someone notable. Just be grateful that you have the freedom that the fallen bought for this country with their lives, to ignore poppy sellers if that is your wish. Your life would have been rather more restricted without their sacrifice.

FIFA simply operating cultural imperialism They use Napoleonic law within which it is hard to set new precedents We operate law based on precedent and reasonableness. It is quite acceptable to make special cases in our kind of legal and philosophical system. When it comes down to it, they don't understand us and are judging us by their own standards

It all smacks to me of a new woman, elevated beyond her capabilities, and facing criticism over her appointment, being determined to put her stamp of authority on something to prove that she really has a grasp of the job in hand. No way now could she back down without losing face.........

Over to the House of Commons PM announcement:- 'Poppy means Brexit' Quite see your point B if I can find a poppy seller I will get one. Can you tell me why people wear poppies from 25th October onwards - is it always Armistice Day for them or will they get sacked or arrested by the Poppy police?

Perversely, I was really pleased that FIFA didn't back down, purely because it gives the FA and SFA a chance to do what they believe is right anyway, and to hell with the consequences. Let's be honest, the next World Cup was sold by the corrupt-to-the-core FIFA anyway, and I'd be perfectly happy to not take part in Russia. So I say we say "thanks for your opinion FIFA, we are doing it anyway - let us know what the punishment is when you've decided and we'll decide whether we are paying any fine later"

Each year the Royal British Legion launch their Poppy Appeal - this year it actually started on 27th October and runs through until Armistice Day - 11th November (even though Remembrance Sunday is 13th November). This restricts it to 2 weeks of the year only, and hopefully, tries to avoid the overkill that you get with so many other fundraising events, and which in turn can lead to boredom or turn people off the whole concept.

I wear a poppy all year round in respect for my Grandad who was gassed on the Somme and also for the thousands of other poor b******s who were led into slaughter.

You don't need to wear one if you don't want to - we always do because we lost close family and we want to remember them in particular. My dad grieved for 50 years for his older brother who was only 22 when he fell in 1942. That's younger than my boys now. So for an uncle I never knew is why I wear one as soon as they're on sale.
