There is no fuss. It is just a blatantly exclusive award which would not be allowed if it were for just white people. It can't even be argued that black people need positive discrimination in the industry because they are already represented disproportionately. I just hate hypocrisy. My view is that not everything can be broadbrushed. The awards came about because the music being celebrated by the MOBO's was being ignored by the mainstream awards such as the Brits. It's purpose was the raise the profile of its music and provide awards to musicians who were neglected by the music press. It has done a fine job and and now the MOBO's themselves are mainstream for the types of music they represent. As with a lot of things in life, it is about nuance.

I disagree that the music celebrated at the MOBO's is over represented. I don't think, for example, that African music is over represented in this country. If you wish to go and set up an awards programme for the likes of Status Quo, Cliff, Uf***ing2, REb******M and Steps, then be my guest but don't televise it, as it will be s***.

I think another tangent from this thread is simply how self indulgent and contrived music awards ceremonies are these days. It's seemingly all about self praise and political backslapping. Oh for the days of the Smash Hits Poll Winners' Party.

Thanks for that well considered and balanced response. I suspect however that northern soul and glam rock is not too popular in Nairobi.

Every ethnicity, gender, race, culture, sexuality or religion should have their own music awards or else everyone is clearly prejudice. I'm all for 'My gypsy music awards'.

All good music began with Kraftwerk. I want a Das Music Auf Kraftwerk Origin awards. Should balance everything out nicely.
