Go up and look for yourself, I know the area reasonably well and would suggest Preston over Blackpool all day long. Closish to Liverpool, Manchester and the lake district - I was aworking in Liverpool, Blackpool is grim though.

What about Lancaster? Have seen some nice houses there at a similar price to Blackpool. The connections look excellent too.

Train connection is excellent, London is about 2 1/2 hours. 40 mins to Warrington then 30 mins to Liverpool and Manchester respectively. Could drive to both in just over an hour M6/62 permitting. Nice city, quite lively, lakes on your doorstep.
