Firstly, I'm confident we'll only need 8 points to guarantee safety and I think we'll collect those in the next six games. Two wins, two draws, two defeats. Originally posted by GujiMadDog
That's right people, with a run of crushal fixtures against teams in and around us coming up, I was left wondering where the hell our next 10 points are going to come from?? Newcastle (H) 1 I have us finishing on a miserable 37 points desperately hoping there are 3 worse teams than us. Is it because I'm caught up in the present air of doom n gloom or.... hic... is this realism?

I don't think 40 points is necessarily garaunteed survival this season.

Avoiding defeat to the teams below us will be the defining factor this season. The games vs Brighton, Watford, Bournemouth and Villa are key. I actually think if we win 2 of these and draw the other 2 that will be enough this season. Easier said than done.

Perhaps the results of the next few games will serve to A minimum of 12 points will be required to guarantee survival, maybe 10 will be enough. With our lack of goal power is it pessimistic to hope that twelve 0-0 draws will do? More positively, any of our present line up will score goals, if they'd only get the service from our defence obsessed midfield or some decent crosses from our backs. Sorloth/Wickham would get hat-fulls if they got such a supply. Benteke would just put them at the keeper, wide or over the bar.

If Townsend is fit enough to start and can quickly find form and Tosun can turn in more performances like against Man City, or Ayew or even Bentenke can step up, then I think we'll be fine. I keep saying it, but without Townsend we have been like a one-winged bird this season.

The bottom 3 always average under a point a game come the end of the season. West Ham in 18th place currently average under a point a game. So what's your rationale behind that? Originally posted by Uphill

You certain know your stuff, scruffy. Only handful of teams have been relegated since the creation of the premier league with one possibly two on the last 10 years with more than 38 points. I think the mythical 40 point yardstick that keeps on being used is about precaution than anything. It certainly ain't nothing to do with the squeaky bum ride my 37 points prediction entails. My bum feels sore just thinking about it!

And in the early Premier League years there were more teams, 22 I think, hence the minimum points total required to stay up being a little higher. At that time, people talked about 42 points being the magic number - again a point a game. Hopefully we'll all feel a bit more comfortable after the next few games! Originally posted by GujiMadDog
