He doesn't look happy here any more, but with Eze out it makes it more difficult. I'd be happy if we got 40 mil for him, and we were looking at the likes of Thauvin and Sarr, so I'd say we would have made some headway in our search for a replacement and 40 mil would be worth the risk.

Which raises the question why wouldn’t any club looking at Wilf go for Sarr instead? He’s five years younger.

I watched a programme about George Best last night and was struck by the difference between Wilf and him. He wanted to show up those fouling him by making them look foolish by using his skills. Wilf doesn't he loses focus, sulks and loses his temper. I am not protecting those who foul him but he has not learned that revenge is a dish best served cold

He could mix it himself as well - he broke Ian Evans’ leg which kept him out for a couple of seasons.

£40M is about right for a 28 year old who only puts a shift in occasionally. Spurs could move for Zaha with Bale not staying. Whoever takes over as Palace boss must be given a decent transfer budget.

Wilf is 28 yet behaves like an 18 year old. He is so easy to wind up no wonder most clubs target this weakness in his make up. He promised so much 10 years but never fulfilled his potential.

I agree with you Putitout. As much as I have enjoyed watching him play and appreciate all he has done for our club, he, and CPFC, need to move on. His market value is not where it was pre-Covid, but it's only going to decline now. We should cash in our chips while we can. Presumably the new Gaffer will want a say too. Not that he was instrumental in CB staying. Or was he?
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

I think now is probably the last chance to sell Wilf for any value. If he does go for say £40m then we'll end up with £30m after Man U sell on but we also have an additional £6.7m in wages off the books. The way accounts work, his wages alone would account for buying 1 player at £15m transfer and paying them £50k p/w for 5 years and we'd show up a saving of £1.1m per year on the accounts. ((£15m divided by length of contract (5 years = £3m p.a.) plus the yearly wage = £5.6m)) £30m plus his wages would essentially allow us to sign 3 x £15m players on £50k p/w wages this season and still show profits in this financial year. The books would show an outgoing of £16.8m for those 3 signings in year 1 but an incoming figure of £30m cash plus the £6.7m a year wages lost, so essentially showing as an ongoing £10m p.a. increase in years 2-5 for 3 additional players which is only £10m additional outlay on the incoming transfer fee for Wilf. That's essentially 3 Eze type deals for 1 Wilf. Losing Sakho and PVA this year would pretty much cover those extra costs. Hypothetically, selling Wilf for £40m could allow us to bring in say Conor Gallagher, Michael Olise and Dan James without really impacting what would have been the original transfer budget without selling Wilf.

Would he still want to leave with Nuno in charge? Would it make any difference to the economics and his aspirations? Everton are not in Europe; and Spurs are barely at its fringe. Would he be banking on 2022/2023 season? In terms of his potential success, he may be so ingrained in Palace culture (see WED) that he may struggle elsewhere... [Would Nuno want him?]
