It would make a nice change to have a manager know his best XI for the first game of the season rather than scrabbling about in the last two days of the window.

I agree. He was great at Villa, didn't get much game time at Liverpool. I have every reason to believe he's still a good player.

A diving f*cking cheat but the moment he scores his first Palace goal I'll forget all about that. Unless he's 30 games in before it happens...

Certainly LFC fans want to see the back of him.

As to all these transfers there is a risk a club overpays if it does it's business early rather than at the end of the window when teams have a settled team after 2/3 games and know who they will and can dispose of. Palace could well have sat tight and attempted to wait until the end of the window and pushed a hard bargain, but LFC know there is still basically 8 weeks to go until the window shuts. Its a catch 22 situation in that LFC will want the funds to invest on new players...CPFC want the player in pre-season training....the player will want some security...who flinches first?

I am so pro this deal happening and think it is huge for us. This guy gets goals wherever he has been and he scored at LFC with very little first team action. Having him for those 2/3 games in August may be the difference of finishing 10th or 6th which next year is about £2m a place....so overall this becomes an educated gamble on going for it at £30m and securing more prize money or bargaining and ending up with a player later on in the window and costing that prize money.

Just the Liverpool fans i believe, and also they always had it set at £30m we've been looking to negotiate but they won't play ball.
In my opinion we should drop it and watch as the liverpool fans implode with rage asking the management team what were they thinking for not selling earlier.
We have more targets i'm sure, move on and bring our money with us.

... but on the other hand.. Benteke..

As you can probably tell I'm very much up for this deal as well. Liverpool will recoup pretty much all the money they've just spent on Mane and I have had many Saints fans say that they'd rather have Benteke over Mane.

Who knows what he is worth? Is it 15m, 20m, 25m, 27m, 30m, more?

If we get him for 30m and he scores 25 goals and that helps guide us to sixth place or higher does that mean we got him cheap?

If we sign him and he tanks we will still get 25m for him next season of that I am pretty certain.

Is anyone laughing at Chelsea for buying Batshuayi for 32.5m who has never set foot in the PL?

Let's just face it - this is all madness and you either stand there screaming and pulling your hair out or just say 'what the heck' and go with the decisions the football club makes.

I hope we sign him but then if we don't I will not lose any sleep over it. Personally I have the feeling this one is going to bite the dust but nothing other than a gut feel says that.....then again that could just be the dodgy Thai curry giving me grief!

To be fair we were always going to flinch first. OK they want rid. But we know he is the only player of his calibre, who plays our system, is a proven scorer in this league and is available. Trouble is, so do Liverpool. And they also know that we will not be the only potential buyer over the next 8 weeks. They hold almost all the cards.

We are over a barrel; but so far as barrels go, it's one of the best.

I think a signing of this size will be the final step to distance ourselves from any kind of "tin pot" moniker we have had in the past. The signing of Cabaye almost got us there and I also think the signings of Mandanda and Townsend have as well, but this would be the final slap in Lineker's smug jug eared coupon. People will even forget that Selhurst is a tad ragged.

I get the feeling that many of them are sad that it didn't work out for him/them, not that they'll be 'glad to see the back of him'.
A good pro and a decent lad according to many, just the wrong club/system at the wrong time.

I really hope this deal goes through.

Out of interest, are we trying to fight off any other bidder of around £30m? I mean, that has to work in our favour. We're not in a bidding war with anyone.

Also, didn't Bristol City want to see the back of Yannick Bolasie? Although the poster was pro-Benteke.

If Ross McCormack was worth 11 million in 2014, Benteke is definitely worth 30 million in todays market.

Hope we get this one sorted. I'll be over the moon if we do.

With the tv deal we all knew fees and wages would inflate, 30 mill this year is the equivalent of 19 mill last year.

And about the equivalent of £2.2m when we signed Akinbiyi (this is not me suggesting we are getting an Akinbiyi quality player by the way, I am in favour of this signing)

One things for sure, if this is happening it needs to go through before Sunday so he can gel with the team in America.

I don't think we're going to find another player of this sort of quality, with PL experience, who would even consider Palace for a microsecond. £27.5m rising to £32.5m with add-ons or a straight £30m? There's so little difference, in relative terms, we might as well get this done and dusted before the US tour. If he gets us in the top half next season he'll have paid back that extra £3m upfront in spades.

You've got me.

I suppose I'm not used to seeing us spending on this magnitude and arguably in the past it hadn't worked when we did. Benteke is certainly a good player, the kind we need to take us forward. Still, I can't help but worry.

Not worth over £30m Liverpool are taking the p**s they only paid £32.5m and he had a poor season so expecting to price him at around that is not good £27m is a fair price.

With how much we look to be spending have to finish in top half if we do like last season manager has to go.

Yep. The figures I heard banded about on the radio mean next season the difference between 15th & 10th on the EPL is around £30m in income.

Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five!

OknotOK Flag Cockfosters, London 05 Jul 16 2.18pm

Given the fees that are being touted for various players at the moment, it doesn't seem unreasonable.

If we want the player - who has the ability to score 15 goals in the PL without question - and Liverpool know that we are a more desperate buyer currently than they are seller (because other clubs will come in later in the market and we could get gazumped) then I think we have to accept our negotiating position.

Even at £30m+ I think it could be the sort of deal that propels the club to the next level. Defensively we were not terrible last season, but we needed a decent goalscorer.
