I refrained in being too joyous when we signed Lerma to mitigate any ridicule for it (and the subsequent desire to defend my delight).

Spend might be irrelevant with regards to a singular transfer but we need several players, most notably wingers. I definitely wanted a partner for Doucoure so box ticked with Lerma, and I wouldn’t say no to a purported Brazilian wonderkid of course, but being the division’s second lowest spenders when we need full backs, wingers and a second choice GK is relevant for me. By a similar token, arguably our best player left for nothing, which would not be reflected in ‘net’.
