Southampton are a far better organised club these day's than CP they have a good director of football who works with the manager on football matters and reports to the chairman who concentrates more on the commercial development of the club. As for revenue according to Deloitte (2016) in terms of revenue Soton are( 22) 149.5m euros and Palace are (2 130.8m euros and as for playing over the years both teams came up through the southern league in the early 1900's, then division three south, then Division 2 & 1 and then of course the PL Soton were in the championship very recently from 2006-2012 and don't forget Soton did rather well as a small club when they played in the old first division at the dell, so all in all the development of both clubs is quiet similar it is just that the football structure works much better at soton which is why we need to have a good director of Football if we are to avoid the current unsatisfactory situation in the future.
