What was even the point in Woods, Gordon, Kirby and Pierrick being on the bench as he was never going to use any of them and we all knew that? Roy Hodgson's bizarre subs part 53: lose Sakho to inkury so rather than bringing on Kelly or Woods, go for Kouyate (along with McCarthy an awful signing made by Hodgson who has done nothing in is time here) and is not a proper centre-half; losing the game so taking off Schlupp and bringing on a more defensive player in Riedewald. Kelly hasn't played since January because of injury.Kouyate has played for his country at centre-half in the AFCON and has slotted into this position at club level. Schlupp had returned from injury and looked very tired.

With the side we have been putting out we don't look like scoring, and certainly don't look like winning. We don't pose any threat to the oposition and won't give players that might a chance. We could have used try out something different for next season, but instead it's just the same old crap that doesn't work. Based on 7 games, 7 loses, 2 goals. Sunday could be Roy's last game in management. If the players have any respect for him they will come out pumped up to give the old guy a good send off, or a chance to continue next season. Exactly this! Ever since we lost at Home to Burnley six games ago it was a nailed on cert we were going to finish 14th. No one below us could catch us and with our remaining fixtures we weren’t remotely likely to pick up sufficient points to overhaul any of the teams above us at that time (June 29th).

The impression I am getting (Rightly or wrongly) is that supporters recognise what Hodgson has achieved in keeping us up on a limited spend and that key to our survival has been the organisation, shape, discipline etc etc that he has installed in the team. This is the Hodgson methodology. However, supporters believe that even if we acquire more flair players, the "Hodgson way" will continue with players having to stick rigidly to the mantra with no room for any inventiveness, "Thinking out of the box" etc etc and woe betide any player who slightly deviates in a game from a rigid "Plan A".That said, the "Plan A" has secured survival in the PL for 3 seasons. Supporters of course appreciate that organisation is important but playing in a "Strait jacket" is not what they want any more and believe that other managers with the same squad could have got more out of them. Edited by Willo (21 Jul 2020 9.45am) Sadly you are correct, I personally believe that Roy has done an amazing job over the last three seasons in keeping us in the PL with an average squad which in the main was inherited from other managers. The loss of form of key players and injuries to an aging squad is out the managers control. The system he plays is to the strengths of those from who he has to choose from. He has made it perfectly clear over several past transfer windows that the squad needs new faces and more talent and yet he has not been backed at board level. We have DoF who appears to be useless. Those who ask for youngsters to be tried from the U23's need to look at their results, 2nd to bottom of their modest league with only 27 goals scored. To change managers now would not be sensible. Roy is the stability that we need whilst we plan for a handover towards the end of next season. In the meantime both DoF and Parish need to get active finding us some smart new talent (4/5) in key positions (ie defender, attacking midfielder and a striker at the very least).

Correct, just thankful we were safe before we faced a run in of difficult fixtures, apart from Bournemouth, they were always going to be difficult with the fight going for european places at the top the division. Those who thought we could be that fight of course were not being realistic.

This is an excellent post and broadly I concur with the sentiments. I would add that Freedman gets ordure heaped upon him on HOL and I suspect most of his detractors are unaware of the work he does behind the scenes.

When I heard about the restart I added that my concerns were heightened due to the schedule of games and the fact that we had an aged squad.

How right you have been proved, any team in PL who can only score 0.8 goals per game should under normal circumstances be relegated. We have got away with it because we had a manager who was able to deal with the squads limitations. I do wish those Roy dissenters would understands this.
