This is an excellent post and broadly I concur with the sentiments. I would add that Freedman gets ordure heaped upon him on HOL and I suspect most of his detractors are unaware of the work he does behind the scenes. We are unaware as there are never any decent signings - or even adequate cover where we have no one. Has to be the worst DOF ever witnessed.

Sadly you are correct, I personally believe that Roy has done an amazing job over the last three seasons in keeping us in the PL with an average squad which in the main was inherited from other managers. The loss of form of key players and injuries to an aging squad is out the managers control. The system he plays is to the strengths of those from who he has to choose from. He has made it perfectly clear over several past transfer windows that the squad needs new faces and more talent and yet he has not been backed at board level. We have DoF who appears to be useless. Those who ask for youngsters to be tried from the U23's need to look at their results, 2nd to bottom of their modest league with only 27 goals scored. To change managers now would not be sensible. Roy is the stability that we need whilst we plan for a handover towards the end of next season. In the meantime both DoF and Parish need to get active finding us some smart new talent (4/5) in key positions (ie defender, attacking midfielder and a striker at the very least). The problem I see is that the handover will be to a manager that would struggle to keep this aging team in the championship - it needs the handover now to prepare for promotion back out of the championship the season after next or just to make the play offs at least. This present team is heading out of the prem and I would say the championship after that :-(

How right you have been proved, any team in PL who can only score 0.8 goals per game should under normal circumstances be relegated. We have got away with it because we had a manager who was able to deal with the squads limitations. I do wish those Roy dissenters would understands this. For once!

I believe they added considerably to their squad in that spend and look how well they have done. We will not attract a proven quality manager if they think the club will not invest in the team. That's why we have to be very appreciative of Roy as he has not walked away when in the past others did.

There is always a "Bigger picture". Sorry Willo, but that is part and parcel of doing that job to factor these things in. if you can't do it, you're not fit for purpose. DF is not fit for purpose.
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

There is always a "Bigger picture". If we have no finances, then not worth having Freedman, or any Director of Football. Free up the wages.

The point I am making is just because a club does not get some targets "Over the line" is not necessarily the fault of a 'Director of football' whose remit can be widespread depending on the TORs.

The buck stops with Parish and the rest of the board. At the end of the day consistent failure to improve the team will ultimately lead to failure and cost the club a fortune, in terms of value and income!

Playing Devil’s Advocate Identifies Guiata and Sorloth. The latter doesn’t get to play his natural position, ships out on loan and starts scoring again. I’m not sure Roy would be the easiest sell to an attacking player. “So Dougie, my job is to score goals” “Yes son, as long as you don’t forget you’re the first line of defence first and foremost”

Oh no wait, he gets paid handsomely to watch football and identify players who will benefit our club, full time, he has the ultimate gig. If he cannot identify players who can be successfully attracted and brought into the club, within our budget and to suit the managers and teams style, he cannot do his job - it's a simple spec.
