A sensible move by Germany to make wearing masks in public compulsory in most situations [Link] If we start opening up more in May combined with a measure such as this, that may well be enough to keep the numbers under control and snuff out the prospect of further lockdowns. ‘What are the rules in Germany? Strange masks aren’t going to be compulsory in shops in some German states. Maybe they think it won’t be followed everywhere, but shops are (a big) part of the point and of minimising risk, and it’s not as if the masks being used will be blocking out 95-99% of particles like the FFP2 and FFP3 masks. The cloth ones with block (absorb) more like 20% but if everyone is wearing them then at least everyone will believe or hope germs aren’t escaping people’s mouths and noses.

Decent masks will have to be more accessible than they are at the moment though I guess we will be encouraged to make our own and the WI will be working their fingers to the bone soon so that those that cannot make them will be provided. From what I understand something really simple that covers your mouth and nose so a cough or a sneeze doesn't travel is all that's needed. Watch this video on how not to do it:-

Years of underinvestment in healthcare has hampered the UK's ability to respond to the coronavirus pandemic, the boss of Roche, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical and diagnostic companies, has told the BBC. "The real issue here is that the UK has probably not invested enough into healthcare," Severin Schwan, Roche chief executive, told the Newsnight programme in an interview to be aired on Wednesday evening. "It really shows up in such a crisis when the system is more stressed." Roche is a key partner of the government and Public Health England in ramping up testing for Covid19. Mr Schwan added: “You can't fix the infrastructure in a couple of weeks. I mean, if there is too little investment over many years into the healthcare system, then it's simply not possible to ramp up as fast as you would wish in such a challenging situation.”

The weak, inept, incompetent or underfunded get shown up in a crisis. The thing is that this is a 100 year pandemic.

How many should the NHS have had in reserve?

Poland and Denmark have the right idea about supporting companies financially. If they are not registered taxpayers in their countries "sod off". Richard Branson take note, you want compo ask the Swiss. Edited by Badger11 (23 Apr 2020 6.44am)

It's unusual in this day and age to hear something positive about our handling of the crisis as the media lead by our trusty BBC are trying to dish up as much negative press as they can find. Today's headlines is that "Essential workers are being ripped off at the petrol pumps" written by their business reporter who clearly has no grasp of company economics

Also Virgin airlines is 48% owned by Delta, perhaps he could try asking Trump for a bailout

I posted that long ago. It is based primarily on ability to react not preexisting healthcare capability It remains to be reviewed as to whether we enacted as well as we could have. Underinvestment means an overall weakened system. IT for example. We had 10 years of everything relatively speaking going backward. I would be surprised if anyone disputed the effects of austerity were retrograde.
