Football, though has changed beyond recognition since those 1970s years. crunching tackles bring a red card today, shoulder-to-shoulder muscling often results in a foul. You can now get sent off even if you play the ball but then hit your opponent in your natural follow-through. VAR has taken away the natural euphoria when your team put the ball in the net and no doubt it will work its way down into the lower leagues. But most of all, money has spoilt the game. It's now a business, whether you are in the PL or the Championship. For me, one's team either needs to be a small club with limited expectations plying its trade in League 1/League 2 with the occasional cup upset against a PL team or in the PL trying to become established and one day winning one of the cups and having a European adventure. The odds of doing another Leicester are about 5000-1.

As an oldie season 68-69 in Div.2 was special with us winning promotion to to the top flight for the first time. Stand out moments for me were beating Millwall home and away and that final home game against Fulham when we secured promotion, all games I attended. Also beating the eventual champions Derby at the Baseball ground on our run in was special. Having now had a total over 20 seasons in the top top division it's easy to forget how big an achievement that seemed back then.

We had season-long campaigns where there were huge achievements at stake played out over time - be they promotion campaigns or relegation scraps. You felt like we were working towards something, it built, had momentum, set-backs etc. There's nothing exciting about a 'season' in the Prem as a whole because our ambition has been killed off. 'Get to x points and fizzle out'. It's just not exciting save for a few unexpected wins as mentioned above. For me, both the individual moments of brilliance/match results, and the 'campaigns' i.e. a season of exciting endeavour with a major achievement at the end - they all happened in the Championship. And I'd add to that that we played consistently more exciting football with some of those promotion-winning teams than anything we've seen in the Prem.

I can remember at the start of last season and the start of this, the consensus on here was that supporters wanted a boring season away from the trauma of a relegation scrap. That is exactly what we got. Have to bring out the ever present cliche here. "Be careful what you wish for". Sorry, but so appropriate in so many threads.

Anything pre 'premier league' and pre all seater stadiums gets my vote The ruination of the game advanced with pace at these points . Modern coaching where ball retention and pace are favoured before skill and heart along with the new laws with regard non contact VAR and cheating players has all but made it unwatchable .

In recent years you've got a win at the Etihad against the champions, two wins in a row at Old Trafford, winning Gerrard's last game at Anfield, regularly beating Chelsea home and away, winning at the Emirates, a team good enough to get to an FA Cup Final, watching Bolasie, Zaha, Cabaye, Sakho (when he was on it) who wouldn't have hung around for 5 minutes in the Championship. Plus, we wouldn't have the academy team we currently have - they'd all be elsewhere.
Watching a dead rubber against Arsenal is better than watching a dead rubber against Doncaster with Shefki Kuqi, John Oster and and Gary Borrowdale running around. My sentiments exactly, so true what you say. My overall best days are now and I’ve been supporting Palace for nearly 40 years!!

A boring season as in mid table or comfortably out of the relegation battle, yes!! Butt NOT painfully boring and frustrating negative performances to get there. We seemed to throw in the towel in so many games last season as well. Personally I’d sooner chance going down attacking and getting stuck in rather than standing off teams and showing the big boys far too much respect
