He says he was due to leave at the end of the year and by going now his replacement will be in situ when Article 50 is triggered and that it would make no sense for his role to change hands later in the year. Again, seems entirely reasonable to me.

The fire in this metaphor being the self serving drive toward globalisation and the disastrous effects of mass migration that comes with it. Hopefully it won't come too late this time.
