We will have to reciprocate and impose tariffs on all goods imported into the UK from the EU nations. Will we though, because a lot of the UK enterprises are foreign owned. I can't see the UK adding tariffs to German cars, given the number of people employed with say BMW or Mercedes. And wouldn't the price just be added on to the end consumer. If your the EU, that's a much larger group, than the UK. Also given the number of memberstates in the EU, the option to subsidise those UK tariffs is probably far more viable than it would be for the UK to do the same. There is then also the risk that in response, that companies will start to relocate to Europe, and the UK is fairly dependent on foreign firms etc. We'll likely end up 'imposing tariffs, and then cutting corporation taxes to compensate firms operating in the UK from import tariffs. Plus can we really 'fight a trade war' whilst also trying to negotiate trade deals with every other country in the world. Wouldn't they just leverage that 'conflict with the EU' to their own ends?. How long before that lot, and plenty more, kick up a fuss about losing market share of the UK's imported goods because the price is uncompetitive due to the imposed tariffs I'd imagine it'll be a race between them complaining, and consumers in the UK complaining about the prices. The EU has a reputation for using subsidies to protect its members losses, and could find it easier to raise that subsidy from each member states than the UK could from taxation. How long to the UK population complain that they can't get olive oil, French cheese, German Cars and parts, and so on (at reasonable prices). How self sufficient is the UK, not very. I'm not saying your wrong, but I think there is a tendency to over estimate our position of strength, because we're currently in the EU. Obviously I hope your right, but I am concerned about the general assumed 'everything will be fine, and there will be no consequences'. There are always consequences from change.

Basically, the government of the UK will pay lip service to the issues of leave, whilst continuing to just serve their corporate masters agendas. All that will happen is that working immigrants will get a worse deal.

All that will happen is that working immigrants will get a worse deal. And that is precisely why we need a third party to pressure them. We still need a UKIP or whatever they evolve into. When the government predictably try and continue business as usual, the electorate need to remind them what it was all about.

What Hoof hasn't addressed is that most of our trade in services. How will tariffs work here. Would say Architects be affected negatively?

Edited by Hrolf The Ganger (31 Mar 2017 1.56pm) UKIP aren't looking too good, no real notable leader, no financial backer and no 'core cause'. Most of the Tories who jumped ship will jump back now, as 'job done', and the Conservatives will utilise the end of the EU to formulate their own strategy, which will effectively be sufficient lip service to the core UKIP doubters, whilst manipulating as closer a deal as possible with the EU. They won't call it freedom of movement, it'll involve visas, and be worse for immigrant workers, but it'll effectively prove to be a formality. They'll cut down the benefits angle (even though these have to be earned), focus on trying to ensure unemployed migrant workers return to home nations and sell that as the major success. But in truth, it'll just be freedom of movement with the formality of some paperwork.

Edited by nickgusset (31 Mar 2017 2.02pm) We don't need 300k people a year to maintain the economy. That is a ridiculous idea. It suggests that a constantly rising population is required to maintain normality which cannot be a sustainable policy. If you want to make Britain white, you only have to wait for the next ice age.

The real issue is going to be keeping governments from doing what corporate entities want them to do, rather than what might be best for the people. I don't have an issue with immigration, per se, only with the scale and methods by which its employed.
