At least the Professionals in the game have a good word to say about Roy.

What a load of rubbish. Have you seen the Fulham side under Hodgson? Or the WBA team under him? ALL attack!
Same goes for his Swiss team and when he was in charge of Inter. What people like you refuse to admit is Roy works with and gets the best results he can out of what he has.
If our team is packed with negative players blame Freedman and Parish. They signed them!

Absolutely, to say Hodgson , is happy to just fiddle around with totally defensive tactics is rubbish. Even here at Palace, in the first two year s , you could see him using the teams potential to attack teams.
And as you say there was not a lot wrong with the attacking capabilities, of the sides you mention.
It’s obvious that’ the board have allowed this squad to stagnate, under his feet, one or two signings with potential backed up with one or two free transfers involving some experience, but legs that will never get quicker has not been enough.
Big Sam, talked them into some solid in their prime improvements ,player wise, this hasn’t happened since that time, and even those people are four years older now. Every average team needs something close to what happened then, to stand any chance of real improvement. The real question for Palace is not who is to manage, right now, it’s a case of, has the club got the where with all to improve this club under any manager?

Eze has been in a bit of a rut. His progression will not always be linear -- two steps forward, one step back. Not sure it can be pinned on the manager. Long term, the fact that he has played different positions, and has been asked to do different things, could be of some utility. I agree with some of the sentiments on here that Wilf's return could open things up for him.

Yep, there can be no certainty, but form comes and goes. A spurs season ticket holder text me after the game questioning why we took off Eze for Wilf just as we were getting back in then game.

There seem to be two schools of thought on how to set up a team.

1) Have a rigid system and get players to play to it.

2) Find a system that works to the players strengths.

Freedman seemed to choose the latter of the two. We had a starting 11 where everyone was great at their roles event though a lot of the players were limited. I think it's a much better what than trying to shoehorn players into a 4-4-2.

Anyone feel Eze is regressing. It may just be poor form or that he's playing out of position.

Benteke, PVA, Sakho, Townsend all seem to have got worse as well. It could be age. Could be Roy, more likely a bit of both.

Benteke's goal to cross ratio has been very good this season though.

Not regressing but certainly not progressing at the moment.

I think he'll be ok, but he seems lightweight physically and his short passing game needs improving.

I think the step up from the EFL was a bigger one that he thought.

Here's one for those who would like Hodgson to leave this summer: If you can't have both, which would you prioritise, an overhaul in the dugout or the squad?

New manager with much the same squad (maybe the usual one or two out and in), or Roy with half a dozen new players?

New manager, same squad. Although the couple additions you speak of are important.

But yes, that one, every day of the week.

Roy needs to go.

No question I would choose the latter, BUT that would be far more costly than the first option so not a particularly meaningful comparison?

You're almost giving me that 'fear of the unknown'.
However, I can't see Roy staying anyway, so all academic. I suspect he's pragmatic enough to see that unless we get a few signings, we'll be in trouble. And I just don't see him wanting to follow any kind of youth policy the club may decide on. He may as well go out having achieved his objective of survival. I believe he enjoys sight-seeing so he won't be bored.
We will regard him highly in the future, I suspect, as someone who did a decent job.

I’m leaning the other direction. I’ll actually be surprised if he leaves. I’m sure he will be thinking that with few decent signings that he could be the man to push us towards Europe. I also think that SP will be thinking the same.

I will say that I struggle to think of anyone realistic that I'd be entirely happy with. That could change at more or less anytime with the job security of managers these days. Totally unrelated: just saw Sorloth nearly score!

I ask partly to see what folk think the priorities are, but also because I'm becoming increasingly doubtful that both can be achieved this summer. The season ends late, then the Euros will take place and that usually delays transfer activity (even if only due to the trickle down effect), so there will be even less time than usual to make signings. We are far more likely to barter, bluff and wait than to barge around paying over the odds, especially if we want our pot of cash to stretch to five or six players.

I presume any new players will at least want to know who their manager would be if they signed for us, and a new manager would want at least some say in recruitment, so we'd have to get the new manager in place pretty early. If we have to negotiate permission with Swansea and Burnley to talk to their managers ahead of an interview process then there literally might not be time to secure a manager and then new players afterwards, especially if Swansea are in the play offs.
