Love the open letter. As somebody who works for a bank (and doesn't get a massive bonus, just like the chap in the letter) this rang some bells for me.

Taking away all my vitriol for Brand, this is a common (deliberate) misconception of the British media over the last few years. It's very convenient for high earning panel members on news quizzes to lump all bankers in together in a big evil money grabber pot and tar us all with the same brush.

As one of my colleagues in the bank often says "When people ask me what I do for a living I don't tell them I work for a bank, I say I am an estate agent that sells used cars on the side". Thanks to lazy journalism, that's how bank employees feel now.

I used to work part time for RBS whilst at uni.

95% are just average Joes earning a crust in the branch like the rest of us, it's a shame that some people feel the need to lie about it now. I know when I was looking for a grad scheme some 7 years ago it really did carry an element of prestige to it.

I earn an ok wage. I earn more than people in some professions and situations. But at no point am I rolling in cash that I personally have exploited somebody to come by. In fact, it allows me to provide a decent enough living for me and my girlfriend and frees up some spare cash to put into charities and such. I can't complain about my life or anything, but I work fork for a bank, not for the devil as some would have society believe.

'bankers' and 'bank employees' are seen as two different groups, surely?

The former have got a lot to answer for. Billions, in fact.

The cynic in me thinks, good as that letter is, that that has been penned by someone who does words for a living - a journalist/writer? - and not by someone associated with RBS. It is just too well written.

It gives it more clout with the RBS link, of course.

Quite possibly true, but given that I don't expect Brand will ever see it as it's an open letter, it sort of doesn't matter. It makes some salient points that a few people might take on board. I don't expect at any point this letter will constitute an epiphany for Brand or his followers, but I still like it.

It is superb. Be even better if it were someone working for RBS. I just don't think it is.

Could be Russell himself

You know, that thought even crossed my mind. Part of me thinks that he's had more success with his campaign as a result of the vitriol against him than from the people that agree. The people that agree with him are probably a fair bit quieter. Those that don't like him (myself included) are probably keeping this guy in business!

I think they should be, but they aren't. To the astute people that have been on this thread, the difference is probably very transparent. To the gawping idiot watching Have I Got News For You and reading "Revolution" I'm not sure it's made obvious enough.

My Mrs is employed by Lloyds Banking Ltd.

She started work as a PA/Secretary for Clerical Medical who were bought by HBOS and then merged with Lloyds.

A banker she is not, and gets a very modest bonus in march of a few hundred pounds.

Her final salary pension has effectively been frozen as any future pay increases will now not count towards her final pension accrual....... tell that to the firemen, teachers and any other public sector worker moaning about their pension benefits!

She hasn't complained as she feels she is lucky to have a full time job.

He should be blaming the RBS security company for not letting him through the doors (if he had a security pass) not Russell Brand

Im pretty sure Brand targets "Bankers" like the directors & owners of banks etc....not regular Joe employees like receptionists, call centre customer service or the cleaners

Everyone seems to begrudge bankers getting bonuses but they are happy to accept that when Scrooge pays off Bob Cratchit's mortgage using profits he's made from banking it's a happy ending. People are so fickle.
