A bit like in cricket where they have 'umpire's call'. The umpire is only over-ruled if his decision was clearly wrong, if it was only slightly 'wrong' then the umpire's decision stands. Benteke was definitely not clearly offside so the goal would have stood if the cricket system was used.

Not a game for the purist, there's drainage issues at St Mary's which has caused havoc with the pitch, I saw the drainage blokes go in yesterday when I went back to retrieve my keys that went flying un-noticed celebrating Luka's goal. Add to the hoolie that was blowing, the conditions were not conducive to a free flowing game. Fair play to the players for fighting, well done the Palace fans who were immense as normal & boo to the usual suspects on this thread who believe a match lasts twenty five minutes

That is technically what is supposed to happen in NFL, except the people doing the reviews seem to have forgotten that crucial bit, especially in recent weeks. Similarly in rugby and rugby league, the TMO can really only influence a decision based on what he is asked. If Union, if the referee thinks it's a try, he can ask 'is there any reason I can't award the try', in which case only something clear and obvious can overturn it. If he asks 'Try yes or no' then there needs to be much clearer evidence it WAS scored. In rugby league the referee tells the TMO what decision he has on the field and again, only clear evidence to the contrary changes the call.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

My understanding on this for football is that the video referee will review the footage and refer it back to the referee if he thinks there is a case to overturn a decision. The referee will then look at the footage on a monitor and make a final decision. Edited by BuckinghamshireEagle (05 Jan 2018 10.34am)
