Would be more conceivable if he'd been our captain for years and retained the status despite not necessarily being a starter, but would seem strange to officially announce him as captain pre-season and then subsequently not play him. I love him but have said on many occasions I think he is the real weak link in this side, especially in the new system where you need composed players who can pick their head up and play weighted passes!

Well, not the "whole idea"; it rather depends on where you're getting your information from. This, already previously posted, suggests that the DM should be dropping back to make it a back four (albeit he happens to be playing, under protest, as a CB currently:
