Pity no one has mentioned Arthur Rowe. Admit it was some time ago but he bought a style of football called push and run. It was one touch football and plenty of movement. I was at the game when we won 9.0 against Accrington Stanley. Probably the start of total football. He did have a player who would walk into any Palace team, namely Johnny Byrne, which this style of football was ideal.

It was actually 9-2 v Accrington, in 60-61, and I missed it because we were on summer holiday. But the previous season, when Arthur was assistant manager, I saw 8-1 v Watford, and just a few weeks later 9-0 v Barrow. In the two seasons 1959-61 Byrne scored 46 goals.
