Isis has 30,000. Boko Haram, Al Shabab, Al Qaeda - let's say another 500,000 at a liberal estimate. Even if we include the Islamic nutters from all around the world who aren't into violence it will still be way short of 300 million.

I blame Thatcher. There is nothing Muslim about ISIS. You cannot appease nutters. Chamberlain found this out in the 1930's. And obviously clearing up this shlt, is the fault of Dubya Bush and his BLiar poodle. Too busy giving out oil contracts to the US/UK and not enough thought into a proper exit strategy.

Kind of agree, although I'd suggest that IS is a manifestation of the Syrian conflict. Civil wars tend to produce a situation where everyone has to pick a side, and quickly can result in a number of extremist factions allied along vague or broad lines. It also often sees existing divisions spliter into different 'national liberation' movements. IS has essentially become a third faction in the Syria civil war, that has come to represent the Sunni Islamists, and has become a magnet for other similar factions - even if they aren't that keen on its brutality - in a civil war factions tend to aim to win first, and then break up or fight it out amongst themselves for supremacy afterwards. When picking sides in a civil war, people tend to pick the one that is most likely to succeed and has some relationship to their beliefs. IS has been successful in achieving a goal that many Sunni's on both sides to the border desire, the establishment, the formation of a country 'of their own'. Not everyone fighting for IS will necessarily be a die hard Islamist, others with be from smaller groups, with similar goals, possibly more secularly orientated (such as Baathists, as in the short term their goals are more or less aligned).
