Just heard that Le Pen aren't going to push for an EU exit but still want to be able to control borders.

Could it be that a right-wing anti establishment backlash leading to the break up of the EU is pie in the sky wishful thinking? Reckon what's happening in th UK regarding an EU exit may be putting others with the same ideas off.

So what?

Europe has always trailed behind Britain in modern times for almost everything. We cast off religion before them, we restrained monarchy before them and we started the Industrial Revolution.
The EU is a failed idea that always had a single European state as it's ultimate goal.
As a left winger, you should see the pitfalls of that aim and how globalisation is another ploy by commerce to make more profit at the expense of the worker.

Now, the worker and business need each other make no mistake, but the reward for making the rich richer has to be a fair percentage of the profit. If we allow a deluge of cheap labour to flood this Europe then a trickle down should make us all richer but we both know that that won;t happen and the proof is in stagnating wages and the pressure on services resulting in more cost to all of us.

He's just pointing out his view that Rogers believes he will be made a scapegoat for the problems that occur with the Brexit process. So he is leaving. Not that hard is it?

Rodgers was meant to be leaving the job in the summer anyway and knew he could not do what he did with Cameron (end up with sweet FA) so jumped ship before he was pushed. All steeleye20 did was make up some stupid sentence about him leaving before he got the blame for things if they did go wrong.!!!

Of course not and his deputy resigned just before him.
Lot of people saying we don't have enough experience in negotiation at this level whereas the EU has.

It didn't help that as chief negotiator, he hadn't been told what was being negotiated towards.

The UK economy is enjoying a temporary reprieve due to the slumo in Sterling. This will lead ti rising inflation du to the delayed effect of more costly imports which in turn will cause an overall downturn in the UK economy. Basically it's the calm before the storm.

I have never seen so much doom and gloom as on this thread. Come on people it is early days and we are setting up for other countries that WILL leave the Eu before long. Our trade is good at the moment and will get even better when we can trade with who we like and not be told by the idiots at EU headquarters. Of course we will hit a few rough patches but we are going to try and get the best deal for us and not the anyone else. The pound has always been up and down and it is not just to do with brexit. It depends on the world market as it always has done and on how other currencies devalue and deal with their own problems.
Lets have some trust in the people who know what they are doing and get paid for doing just that.

Agreed. But they will get elbowed out of the way by the Hardliners just like the recently resigned UK's EU Ambassador if they dare speak of anything which the intransigent Leavers don't want to hear.

Michael, do have any evidence that Tim Barrow will be a stooge for the 'Hardliners' or 'Extreme Right' [both terms sic] you consistently accuse of having an agenda of hard Brexit?

I have found nothing on the internet to suggest that Tim Barrow will be. In fact, Nigel Farage was rather cynical regarding Barrow's appointment.

It seems to me that Barrow was brought in because he will handle affairs in the manner that is expected of the civil service, which is finding ways to implement government plans whilst advising on course of action. Not having a polarised position to the government.

I'm guessing that the irony of this is completely lost on you.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham
