I see slavery has returned under the tories and health problems like rickets malnutrition TB etc. re-surfaced but as long as the FTSE is high we will continue to give them enough QE to get richer. Well the record demonstrates that social advances are made by labour not the tories. For most of us the NHS and welfare state are fundamental to our lives no matter what we say and labour delivered them.

But you don't get a welfare state without the environment that allows for it. And you don't get that in Britain without all the factors I previously described.

I'm not saying that Oliver Cromwell dreamed of an NHS. What I am saying is that you cannot see things in isolation but as part of the progression of history. You must also remember that each political party thrives on votes from it's own target sections of society. Labour have to appear to and sometimes actually care for the less well off. They would not exist otherwise. It is therefore no surprise that historically,they nave often championed causes dear to the poor, sick and the needy. This does not represent any great moral superiority, just a desire to please their potential supporters.
