It could make you, Nick, Chancellor of the Exchequer if it wants. However, it might well face a vote of no confidence in the House of Commons if it did. Even if it didn't, it would eventually face the electorate in a General Election and the UK electorate would judge whether uncontrolled immigration was a good thing, or whether you were doing a good job as Chancellor. While subject to EU dictats from unelected EU Commissioners, the House of Commons and the UK electorate do not have these checks and balances at their disposal.
