Although I would argue that every generation suffers from the same issue – it's a sort of infant/young adult bias concept. The average joe doesn't think too hard about adult realities between the ages of 0-16 (or later). I know a guy who waxes lyrical about the 70s. Delusional, when you actually look into what was happening back then. Inflation, high unemployment, poor living standards by todays comparison, regular power cuts, strikes, wars, states of emergency, I could definitely go on for several minutes. Someone has said there was no racist abuse at all and the player in question may have mis heard/mis understood. I couldn't really care less either way.
People from all ethnic backgrounds are abused all the time. The 'desperate to be offended' brigade should maybe hold back the venom till the full facts are discovered. Personally, I dont think thats unreasonable (even though we do seem to be slipping toward a guilty until proven innocent policy in our society these days)

This is a question of determining relative importance. A football fan insulting a footballer barely registers on the scale of importance. Neither in my view should it be judged based on its relation to race.
An insult is an insult. Only politics and commerce singles it out as something different.

He may well have misheard - in which case I’d expect all the people sitting around this chap. Of which there would have been many, to come forward in his defence. And then he can explore legal options for defamation, libel, slander etc. as already mentioned. And quite rightly so

Despite all that I agree with you that innocent before being proven guilty should be the norm but the fact both clubs and the police are convinced enough to leave themselves open and make public statements tends to start tipping the scales in only one direction.

No harm in debating based on available information.
