He’s a model pro who will be tough to replace. He’s no spring chicken but probably had another couple of decent seasons in him. Personally I’d like him to sign a 1 year contract but he can probably get a better offer elsewhere. A guy I know who’s got some inside info has told me previously that Andros absolute loves football more than anyone else and just wants to be on the pitch for 90 mins every game - apparently (and surprisingly) most pro’s don’t actually enjoy it all that much.

If it is the case that Joel Ward will be offered a new contract and Andros Townsend will not, then I think we are moving in the wrong direction! Ward was a liability last year and it would be a surprise if he improved this time round. Townsend has flair. If you happen to believe (highly unfashionable view) that football is about entertainment, then it's a curious decision.

What are their salaries? My guess is that Wardy will be significantly below Townsend this year. Also, it will be his testimonial year, which is great. I wouldn't be surprised if it also had something to do with the length of the contract. Originally posted by Elwissthebest

Also forward players have flair and defenders generally not - follow your train of thought and we'd still have Vince Hilaire! But more seriously Andros is now on the backburner as a first team regular behind the likes of Olise and Eze. Useful squad player and good for when we are packing midfield with players who track back. My guess is he will turn up at Norwich. Edited by Omph (14 Jul 2021 10.05pm)

Townsend probably on double or more than Ward and knows he can get a few year contract elsewhere where as the club didn’t want to give him long contract. He is no major loss, he has had some good moments but he can be easily replaced.

Aside from his stunning goals and crossing ability, I don’t believe Andros is given sufficient credit for the unbridled enthusiasm he shows in every game. This can rub off on other players - as can the negative vibes some are guilty of.

I'll be really sad when he is confirmed out and agree with your attitude to him. Extra kudos for wearing the Eze shirt at Selhurst after the final match. Originally posted by djmikeyp

I notice that Clyne was with the squad at St Georges Park in the recent video. Couldn't see any other out of contract players. Personally I'd sign both Ward and Clyne, as we have no idea if Ferguson will be good enough even if can get fit. Unless of course we can sign an excellent young right back, or have one coming through the system. Not sure if there is any significance in Clyne being present in terms of the club wanting to keep him, or perhaps he might simply have a different approach to training (and risking injury) when not under contract - he trained with us when out of contract before.

According to Sky Sports offers made to Ward and Cahill. According to another source, who was right about a signing on Saturday, long before news broke, Ward and Clyne have already signed, Cahill weighing up his options. Pinch of salt as always.
I am not a bot. No, seriously, I'm not. |

If both Ward and Clyne sign then two things are apparent.

Plus Ferguson can apparently play across the back four, so he may end up at centre back, in which case we'd still need two right backs.
