If we sign anyone exciting or half decent, I will be massively surprised. Some of the threads on transfer talk are at best pipe dreams, at worst ludicrous. This is not personal to any posters - fantasise as much as you like - but by the end of the transfer window, reality bites.
What we should be working out is which position we will have one player, or even no one in? Guess away.

I think you have made a really good point. Both selling and buying clubs are working out what the new normal is in these Covid19 times. Selling clubs expect the price for their players they could hold out for before Covid, and need loads of dosh because of loss of income. Buying clubs have lost income too and can't afford to pay the prices they could before. So it's a new language of selling and buying, and no wonder it's taking time to sort out.
