Just caught up with last week's 'Big Match Revisited' and the main feature was a 4th round cup tie in January 1979 of the Cup Holders (Bobby Robson's Ipswich) at home to 2nd division Orient on a terrible snow covered frozen pitch. All the legendary tractor boys were playing (Mick Mills, Paul Marriner, George Burley, Arnold Mueren, etc)and they hammered Orient. Just one bloke prevented them scoring, John Jackson, who had just left Palace. Talk about brave keeping - flung himself at everything and so commanding in the air, earning rave reviews from the commentator (the much missed Brian Moore) and from (the later to be 'Sir') Bobby Robson himself.

I agree that Jacko was fantastic in the air - these days keepers including our own JS seem to struggle to actually lift their arms above their heads. Paul Robinson is another.

I agree John Jackson is the best Palace keeper I have ever seen. I think our three years in the top division had a lot to do with his goalkeeping displays. Still is my top Palace hero.

We've been lucky to have some excellent 'keepers at Palace down the years...but Jacko for me is still the best. Largely down to him that we managed to stay in the top flight for 4 seasons back in the late 60's-early 70's.

Agree with all the comments. A great keeper who performed some miraculous saves for us. Never forgave that c-unit Joe Royle going in on him studs first thigh-hight in, I think, a cup tie that ended 2-2. Everton were dirty that day.
Mel Blyth's half-hit backpasses ... a thing of beauty (usually to the opposition centre forward) |

I agree 100%. I just celebrated 40 years of watching Palace at Selhurst and Jackson was the best keeper I ever saw - even better than Nigel Martyn, Speroni and Kolinko!!

great keeper I saw that BMR some time ago, speaking about keepers being dodgy in the air Joe Hart looks one of the dodgiest, good shot stopper and presence , shocking at corners and free kicks.

My favourite Palace player of all time. Not 100% sure he was better than Nigel Martyn in his prime, but comfortably my hero, anyway.
