Not a very good player, but nowhere near as bad as some make out.

I agree. For a while you could see him progressing but then he seemed to go backwards. Very far from being in the Worst XI but just never made the step up.

You fed me, you bred me, I'll remember your name.

I used to work with his dad, a Chelsea supporter, and he hated it every time I said that he couldn't take a corner for sh1t! I suppose as it was his son he saw the sun shining out of his arse I believe Gary himself was a Liverpool fan

Nearly as bad as Craig Harrison who played as if he always had a broken leg

Fantastic hair though.

Decent enough player but was intimidated by Darren Ward. Who was the idiot on here who used to refer to him as 'Horrordale'?

I'm not sure I was guilty of starting that, but definitely used the nickname.

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Gary did a decent job for us but seemed to lack confidence - his crossing was woeful. However, he was an academy product so didn't cost us anything and we got a few hundred grand when we sold him, so it is unfair to say he was a failure.

Of the academy players - none of whom i like to have a go at - the worst i can remember where Robert Quinn, striker Martin (no pace or ball control and a bit lazy) and in the late 90s a young winger called Rory Ginty. Wayne Carlisle wasn't much better.

Really the issue is with big money flops as they are the ones who cost the club - Ismail, Kuqi, that Israeli bloke etc cost the club millions and that's where we should focus our anger

I watched Gary develop as a youngster in our successful Academy. Whilst he was developing he was top class,I remember when he had trials for England schoolboys. I was employed at the satalight centre in Bracknell where we had a good production line for the Academy. Gary was a good prospect at youth level.

Same here....in the Palace youth team of that time, he and Ben Watson stood out from the rest in my opinion.

As somebody else has pointed out, we got a reasonable fee for him when he left, so on that basis alone he was a successful product of our academy.

nothing personal but I thought he was awful. Only capable of hoofing the ball down the line to find touch.
