Have a read of this, a total fruitcake but as genuine and hard as they come. Plus some nice things to say about us.

Good read, and to anyone, like myself, supporting Palace in the late 70's the guy is a legend.Used to get to games early just to see his warm up!

I remember Budgie very well,a great character and as fit as feck.He used to walk on his hands in the goal mouth warming up.One of the games great characters, they don`t make em like that any more.He was as nutty as a fruit cake, and a very good keeper at Palace.Reading that article took me back a bit, great times.

I met John in the early 90's when attempting to get my "Palace Book" signed.

I saw him playing for Blyth Spartans at Alfreton, he gladly talked about his days at Palace, posed for a photo (doing handstands!)an all-round nice bloke.

He then invited me to a Blyth Home game and arranged for a car to take me back after the game to Newcastle.. well a few Brown Ales were sunk by me!!!

One of the top trips!!!

Great piece. And accurate. I have the privilege of knowing Budgie pretty well. I used to play sport (not footy) at international level with his son and I stayed at their house up north quite a few times. His enthusiasm for life was clear to see for everyone. An infectious character, someone you always wanted to be around. Mad as a box of frogs but a really great genuine guy. I saw an interview years ago where he said that even as a man in his 40's he still so passionate about football and that he watches match of the day in the front room with a pair of keeper's gloves on and a ball, re-enacting every save shown on the footage like a kid would. I can confirm I've witnessed him doing this, diving all over the front room like a nutcase. Legend

I can heartily recommend his autobiography - [Link]

And also he features as a bonus feature on this DVD doing his famous warm up routine!

He is one of my favourite ever Palace goalies (after John Jackson!)...
