What is realistic for us. Europe next year? Year after?

Geoff Thomas thinks its immediate:

Talking about European football over the next few seasons would have seemed crazy even a few weeks ago. Not so much now.

“The top four is probably stretching a little too much but the Europa League spots are definitely there to be had,” said Thomas. “They have proved that by beating some top sides.

“When you listen to what is coming through the youth system and what has been produced in the past, you don’t know what gems are ready to be unlocked.

“Why not the Europa League?

Let's not get carried away now!

We had barely any injury worries in the 2nd half of the season and all our players seemed to be on form at the same time, resulting in a 5 game winning streak.

When next season starts, we're back at square one, facing new and improved opposition. It will be about staying up for the foreseeable future.

Not yet, three or four years time if we have managed Prem survival

This has been discussed recently on here, look at Newcastle, Swansea, Fulham all suffered with Eurpoa league. We don't have the squad and unless the Europa league is reformed I see little point in entering it.

The levels of performance drop considerably with reduced rest, there was a recent study

After only 2 recovery days: 70% less goals scored in 60-90min
After only 2 recovery days: 75% more goals against in 60-90min

We will be in a relegation battle for 3 or 4 years. Just Stoke, Norwich, Wigan, West Brom, West Ham, Villa etc all are/have been.

Finishing 11th in our first season back doesn't mean thats the worst position we will now ever finish in. I doubt we will better it in the next 3 or 4 years.

Forget about Europe - all I want is PL survival and then gradual improvment. Would get far more satisfaction
beating Manu,Newcastle or Spurs at SP than some eastern european club I never heard of.

If someone offered me 17th next year I would rip their arm off and say thank you very much.

Absolutely would take 17th next year. But Europa league isn't as big a burden as people think, you can attract better players if you're in it. Look at Swansea with Bony

All the way back to John Jackson, Stevie Kember and Bert Head. So I am quite use to false dawns. This seems different. There seems to be real intent and although at the start of the season I would have said its a ridiculous thought, I now think its something that may well be possible in about 3 yrs or so when we have cemented a mid table position.

I say this because in the Premier we seem to have two divisions in one (top 10 and bottom 10), and there's not an awful lot of quality in the bottom half. With TP I can see us being spoken of the same way that Southampton is spoken of today. I think that would be a launching pad for Europe and, again with TP and the present management that looks set to happen sooner rather than later.

It might be premature from Geoff, but I think as we raise expectations that too will happen sooner rather than later.

I am certain that the current top 8 will finish above us next season. Let's consolidate and be happy with staying up again.
