By league position, 2013/14 was our third-best ever.

And here's a startling stat: it was achieved with our lowest-ever tally of goals scored, in any season, including years when we were bottom of the 3rd Division South!

Below I present all of our top-tier years:

Year Pos
1991 3
1992 10
2014 11
1980 13
1990 15
2005 18
1971 18
1995 19
1998 20
1993 20
1972 20
1970 20
1973 21
1981 22

Another fact slipped by fairly unremarked: The 75,170 fans who watched Man Utd v Palace at Old Trafford on 14 September was the biggest crowd ever to watch a Palace league game. Present that day were 72,170 prawn-sandwich-munching United fans consulting their i-pads and complaining that they were only winning 2-0. Plus 3,000 Palace fans, all singing.

And the 60,005 who watched Arsenal v Palace at Highbury was the third-biggest crowd ever to watch a Palace league game.

In both cases, as I'm sure we all noticed, it was the miraculous pocket of Palace travelling fans who made all the noise, filling those mausoleum stadia... regardless of the score!

Our average home attendance was our 6th best ever, frustratingly limited by the ground capacity:

Year Average
1973 30,167
1970 29,901
1980 29,794
1971 28,604
1972 26,973
2014 24,377
2005 24,103
1979 23,294
1998 21,983
1974 21,797

The 33 goals we scored last season equals the lowest we've ever scored in a season... but every goal was a diamond! That other lowest year - 1950/51 - was quite a contrast... we finished bottom of the 3rd division south! Ho ho, how times have changed. To be fair, we played 46 games in that season, so it was a much worse tally.

Finally, 48 goals conceded is 14 fewer that we let in during our successful promotion season last year. But it is a long way behind the 1978/79 promotion year when we let in only 24. I'm sure a lot of our readers will remember that year!

I think that's enough interesting stats.

Best year ever? What do you think?

Firstly, great post, thanks for the effort!

It underlines the huge acheivement we have just witnessed. I recall the 3rd and 10th placed finishes well - both simialrly massive efforts, but also worth considering how different football was back then. The gulf between the top sides and the rest in terms of money and players is nothing like what it is now.

The last 2 Premier League campaigns featuring so high in our average attendances also backs up Steve P's point about how much bigger a club we are in the top division than in the Championship. It may be a contentious argument on the messageboards, but there is little doubt from the figures that we have a large number of supporters who only show up for the top division/big games. The hope is the amazing atmosphere and the general spirit about the club and supporters we have now will educate some of those so, should the worst happen, they might not be so quick to disappear next time.

As for goals - well Dwight looks like he'll sort that out next season!

I guess a lot of the time, lack of goals comes from a deam in disarray and struggling. I think this time we've sinply seen that we've been scoring effective goals and defending properly. I also think it's fair to say that the longer the season went on, the better accustomed the players were to the system and we both created and scored more (not sure if the stats support that, but that's how it felt! )

Good stats indeed sir. It was before my time but the 3rd place in 1991 has to be regarded as the best ever season whichever was you look at it. However, this year has been the best I've seen as an adult, followed by the Dowie promotion year.

On the subject of stats, I remember reading an article before the start of the season just finished in which somebody had analysed the goals for and against records of clubs who have been relegated from the Premier League.

One very salient point that was made was that the teams who escaped relegation weren't the ones who scored the most goals but the ones who conceded the least. What better demonstration of that than our Goals For and Against record for 2013-2014 !

Hambo, I agree: the low-goals-for/against were the consequence of TP’s new defensive / counter-attacking combination style which I’ve never seen before in any Palace team. I watched it with fascination and loved every minute as it improved throughout the season.

Will Tony build on this same strategy next year?

Indeed, I've seen three different (similar) numbers quoted by different websites, none of whom cite their source. Hard to know which one is right. I chose to use 24,114 which comes from here:

[Link]

They also quote a 91.6% actual vs capacity number for Palace which is again interesting compared to many clubs achieving 98% to 99% figures - though some get more than 100% which I guess means they need to update their ground capacity number!

My average was taken from CPFC official website and triple checked so 24,377 should be correct whats added extra confusion is that some sites have the wrong home attendance quoted for Arsenal game as 20,050 when in fact it was 25,050 so has affected the average attendance.

Superb. Thanks Palace67 for the information. I have updated the original post.

That improves the actual vs capacity ratio to 92.6%. Not a very good number really - one of the worst in the PL. What's the cause of that?

One of the causes is that our actual capacity is lower than is on record. Works and changes at the ground have meant the previous 26,309 and is actually around 1,000 lower now. Steve B said the exact figure on the BBS a while ago but can't recall when.

We have an area of 3,000 seats for away fans but typically resitrict sales to 2,600.

We have 800 restricted view seats, which obviously go on sale once everything else is sold, but might be considered as undesirable.

Add that lot up and you can see we're not far off selling out every game.

Great stats!

I think the main reason is there's a number of restricted view seats. So although seats in front of posts count towards the capacity, getting someone to pay money to sit there is another issue (though some do on big games)! Also, depends on how big the sterile area is.
