Something I noted on another thread is that until March Joel hadn't picked up a yellow card ( he ended up with three). That is pretty good going for a defender.

The reason for this would be his positioning, reading of the game and timing. He doesn't have to lunge in with late tackles - he picks his moment and does it with great efficiency.

I for one look forward to him being back in a Palace shirt come August fresh from a summer rest.

Been amazing this season, by far the most improved! Great all round player, in my eyes, should be picked to go rio! But I suppose it's mostly all about who you play for! If he was playing for a team in the top 4/5, he would be picked! Completely wrong.

Sorry but this is bollux. How can Woy pick a player to represent England in the World Cup if that player has never played an international before? If it were seen that Ward was not up to it in a match... there would be hell to pay for Woy. Would anyone take that decision? If Ward was a young forward and there was good cover in the forward positions, it may be possible. But not a defender/midfield player when England are struggling for cover with Cole retiring, Shaw short on experience and Johnson showing frailties. Woy has gambled on Jones and Jones being auxiliary full backs. He cannot gamble further, as a gamble it would be.

People getting carried away again, Joel has been fantastic for us, Clyne hass had a great season as well.

Roy took a a gamble on Shaw and I think that will pay off but beyond that these aren't friendly games or qualifiers, I'm sure he knows what he is doing

I wouldn't say he had a "GREAT season". I think he only played in about half of the league games this season and shared the full-back duries with the emerging teenager Calum Chambers.

But he's been injured for some of the time hasn't he?

Maybe, however one still cannot say that he has had a GREAT season as he only played about half the number of games. That said, Clyne is a talented player.Just a shame that he has an affection for Chelsea !

I was about to say that, clyne is better than ward and clyne doesn't start for a midtable team all the time. Granted Clyne is probably first choice at southampton as he plays the big games, but the fact he has only played twice more than chambers shows he isn't the best right back in the country.

Messi, you're good, but you can't hit a ball like ambrose

Chambers played a lot because he done well when he replaced an injured Clyne. It would have been terrible management by Pochettino to put Clyne straight back into the team when he was fit again, it would have basically said to Chambers and other youngsters/squad players that regardless of how well you play you aren't getting in the first team.

As you've already said, Clyne still played in the big games which says more than the number of appearances of the two.

Whilst that's true, if you deserve to be in the england squad for a world cup you shouldn't be competing for a place in a midtable team, especially with another english player. When Baines was injured, oviedo did very well, however since baines has returned i'm not sure if oviedo has played. That's because Baines is a better player and an england quality player so plays every week.

I get the point you are making, whilst adding that Oviedo broke his leg at the start of this year and has not played since.
