Benteke (suggestion)

OK, it'll never happen, but... He clearly wants out of Villa. Like it or not, they're going to have to cash in now (or never) and does anybody seriously think Randy Lerner won't take the money? For whatever reason, it appears the top four either won't meet Villa's asking price or are looking elsewhere. Yes, he'd cost more than Austin or Remy but there's a good reason for that. Might he come to London? Look, I don't really think in my wildest dreams we're going to pull this off but would it hurt to put in a bid? I mean, what do we lose? At his best, he's easily the most accomplished Premiership goalscorer who might be on the market and if you don't ask, you don't get. Just a thought.

My only point is that you don't ask, you don't get. I fail to see what harm expressing an interest could do. If nothing else, it would establish us a club ambitious enough to ask. It ain't gonna happy but it can't hurt to try.

The difference is that Lombardo failed at Juve and didn't have a lot of offers. Benteke is no falure and there is plenty of competition offering regular European football

The difference is Lombardo cost us about £1.5m. Benteke is £32.5m. The romance of football is wonderful... People actually thinking we can afford £32.5m on a player.... Plus wages.

I think you're all missing my point. Benteke is NOT a rumour. It was a suggestion. And my reason for the suggestion was not because I thought we had a chance of buying him but, as I made clear, I think there are knock-on benefits from simply expressing an interest or even bidding. It enhances the profile of the club to be linked with a certain type of player (by showing ambition), whether we actually sign him or not. Given how explicit my OP was, I'm surprised by how many people appear to have misread what I said.

Agree, If we put in a bid that we could realisticly afford, it would come across as insulting. If we just test the waters with a higher bid that we cant afford and they accept because 'lerner wouldn't turn down the money' then we would have to back track making us look incredibly foolish. How about we just go after people we can actually get and afford...

And all of a sudden Crystal Palace are going to meet the asking price.!!!! Lombardo at he end of his career.(Should of given Hopkin the Money.) You might as well add Edgar Davids.
