Hi all. Boring topic, but I need a new car as mine is dying. Any good suggestions out there for a family of 4?

My wife drives it once or twice a week for shortish (like 5 miles) journeys and we do drive on holiday with it. It should have plenty of boot space, as I'm sick of using roofboxes on holiday. Wife doesn't want an estate, though.

Fuel efficiency not a huge deal, as our total annual mileage is quite low.

budget around 7-8K

Thanks in advance!

Currently on our second Vauxhall Zafira - no complaints.

Seven seats if required, massive boot if not (and the seats fold into the floor so you can easily mix and match - luggage/dog one way, people the other)

If you don't mind a 7 seater, have a look at a Vauxhall Zafira. With the back 2 seats folded down, there is massive boot space, enough for at least 3 large suitcases.

Thanks guys, 2 votes for the Zafira already!

Don't mind 7 seaters. Anyone had any experience with the Hyundai Santa Fe?

For basic family travel, it's got to be a Skoda Octavia. Basically a Golf but way more reliable. Extremely well built and cheap. Just the right size, personally I would go for the estate version and probably the 1.9 diesel.

Thanks. The wife isn't a fan of estates. Maybe I can win her over.

I went from a Zafira, when we still needed the space to a Honda Jazz. Both very reliable but also very dull.

I wanted an MX5 as it would have meant leaving the kids at home. Not sure if I could have bought a decent one for £6k either.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I'm a big fan of the 7-seaters, we've got a Ford Galaxy (57 plate) and had it for the last 2.5 years. Love it! We don't use the rear two seats much but it is great if we have friends/family visiting and don't want to take two cars.

When the back seats are down the boot is huge, and all of the 5 rear seats are independent so you can have whichever combination you like (and it takes only about 5 seconds to put the seats up and down). We've only got two kids but the amount of kit we seem to transport certainly justifies the extra space!

(and no, I don't work for Ford!)

Zafira from me also, had a X reg 1.6 and now due to wifes disability a 2.0L CDTI SRI zafira tourer and the old one I gave to my friend and it is still going strong for them.

I do like them and boot space is really good on both but rear two seats leg room on the new one is only meant for children or people with extremely thin legs and although it has handles under the rear 3 seats which I guess was for moving the whole lot forward like on the old one the seats just don't seem to move.
