What if he'd done the accounts as a job for an external firm, or worked for Allianz to insure the camps? I won't go so far as to mention the story that Cola Cola invented Fanta for the Nazis as they didn't have the ingredients to make the actual cola in Germany, or whichever oil company it was who had to develop a new fuel for the Luftwaffe's planes or Boss designing the uniforms, but there was a lot more direct involvement that could equally be punishable. I can't boycott the whole country (who signed up for it) as I'm off there to see Palace this weekend. The important thing to remember here is that he wasn't fighting for his country. The SS were an armed political force, not a national army. I don't think there is any reasonable excuse that permits avoiding responsibility for direct participation in genocide of civilians. That said its worth noting that the individual in question twice applied to transfer from Auschwitz, and eventually ended up in the Waffen SS fighting in the Ardnes. He also served as a witness against another War Criminal and spoke out against Holocaust denial. It seems something like a suspended or community sentence would be more appropriate, and that maybe his conviction has more to do with political capital than anything else. But he was a direct and willing conspirator in the holocaust. Four years maybe lecturing at the assorted memorial camps would probably serve better than prison.

Actually he transferred out from the role at a Death Camp, and fought with the Waffen SS in Battle of the Bulge.

The Stanly Milgram investigation proved that people will do anything they are told. Gibsons investigation of Milgram's experiment presents a very good critical analysis of Milgram's Obedience study that presents a very valid argument against the simplistic parameters Milgram established (he shows that negotiation is the core of obedience and power, not a inherent construct). Milgram's work suffers from very strong experimenter bias and its assumptions are faulty, when you look at the results in term of discourse analysis (the rate of obedience drops dramatically when you listen to the faux authority figure and the subjects discourse. Sorry I wrote my last essay on Gibson and Milgram, and I'm a huge Zimbardo and Milgram fan. You should be sorry - in fact you should be put on trial for crimes against plain English. Probably; its the product of a Conservative State Education, so I blame Thatcher, at least from the age of 9 onwards. Its always someone else's fault, right I read it and from what I could make of it we are looking to sign Zimbardo - is he Brazilian ?? As for Groening - he was very candid on the BBC Doc series about his experiences and at first banned talk of it in his household and then (pangs of conscience maybe?) broke cover to combat Holocaust denial. He did as has been pointed out also try on several occasions before being successful to transfer into a fighting unit. Retribution now is pointless.

I find it odd that many people are prepared to forgive and forget the part this guy played in exterminating hundreds of thousands of innocent human beings yet these same people have such a bitter hatred of Maggie Thatcher, the Bankers and old people who they believe are bleeding the country dry with their pensions.

Probably because they have first hand experience of Conservative policy of the 80s, which Thatcher personally was responsible for. Where as this bloke was an administrator for a few years at the death camps, until he could transfer out to a Waffen SS battalion.

That is to say its less abstracted - WWII was something that happened to other people, so consequently their experience is second or third hand, which distances you from the events. Its less personal.
