If we are to truly kick on this year we are still in definite need of brining in a centre half before the window shuts. Who would you bring in?

I'm not sure I agree. I think Damo gets far, far less respect than he deserves on here and a lot of those mentioned as possible incomings (Hanley, for one) don't seem to me to be serious upgrades. The quickest way to improve our CB performance wouldn't be a signing; it'd be to put Jedi (or, at a pinch, Ledley) back in the team. With five ballplaying midfielders and little cover from a holding player, any centre back is going to be stretched.

Totally respect the guy. He's just not quite good enough to play at this level, that's all. Nothing to do with respect. Personally think both Hangeland and Kelly are better options - but obviously don't see training etc and fully trust AP. Agree with what you're saying about a CDM though.

Hangeland has said himself he cannot play week-in week-out due to knee problems (I think it was). This is a shame, as he looks good when he plays.

That being said, I like Delaney but think we should look to bring in someone younger if we are not going to play Kelly there.

If you come to a fork in the road, take it.

Agreed, but I'd have thought Kelly was the "someone younger." I think Dann and Damo are just fine with a holding midfielder in front of them (the last two seasons prove this.) Hangeland is excellent part-time cover and Kelly is the promising apprentice. We also have Mariappa at a pinch. Plus Ryan Innis at Port Vale, who's meant to be an excellent prospect. I think unless we can get a really serious upgrade on Damo (someone considerably better than Hanley) then I'm not sure the money would be well spent. I'd much rather see it go on a better right back.

I think we're at the point now where we have a pretty good squad and further upgrades are going to require serious investment. We've been a 10th place team the past two seasons and the next step is going to require upgrading to Cabaye-class. I think we're better going with what we've got and making a few, serious forays into the transfer market rather than multiple players who are really no better than we now have.

This one's been doing the rounds for a couple of weeks. He's not the finished article, but he's got enough about him that he'd be worth a sensible investment in the hope that we could polish him into the finished article. I don't think Hector is an immediate replacement for Damo. More a Martin Kelly sort of buy; one who may be good enough to make it in a season or two, so worth snapping up now and bringing on ourselves rather than waiting until he matures and costs double the price.

Did anyone else notice Pardew appearingly by mistake saying he needed a CB in yesterday's press conference? He was asked about Sako afterwards and mentioned how people should credit SP for that one and he said something along the lines of "I was mentioning how I need a centre back, but he pursued it so fair play to him".

Just been reported that West Brom are willing to let Lescott leave. Won't cost a lot either. In my view, we could do worse. I think we could get a couple of seasons out of him given his experience while we develop someone like Hector. I'd also be interested in Jonny Evans. Neither are big name signings but both are competent, experienced Premiership players who don't make a lot of mistakes and would bring a big club mentality.
