Both the Mail and the Telegraph have suggested that Sunderland would be willing to release Jermaine Defoe.

For a couple of million wouldn't he be an excellent short-term fix to our current dearth of strikers?

Maybe past his best but still quick and better than anything we have who is fit and we need goals desperately!

A massive no from me, two major reasons:

a) Past it, he aint exactly been prolific for the maccums,

b) Has to play as a front two, even Big Sam has said this hence why they have been playing a 5-3-2 formation.

Two goals for Sunderland today.
I'm sure Sam will keep him.

As his long contract supposedly was worth about £14 million if he stays for the length Sunderland might well wish to get rid of him. Doubt whether he agrees tho.

Sunderland saying (according to Sky) they'd let him go 'if the offer is one they could not refuse'

After seeing his two opportunistic crackers at the week-end I still think he is the best proven PL scorer possibly obtainable (as opposed to unproven Championship or European strikers who would probably cost a lot more anyway and might take ages (or never) to adapt)

If not him it will be fascinating to see what we eventually end up with - but end up with someone effective we must!

To be honest, for four months either Crouch or Defoe would do a job and, with the service they'd get from us, probably a very good one. Like them or not, these guys are proven Premier League goal scorers, something we simply do not have at present. And they both have at least something left in the tank. They're not long-term solutions but we could do a hell of a lot worse.

I rate Defoe, I just don't know if he'd suit our style of play. AP seems to favour a big target man (as evidenced by Gayle not getting much of a look in - although I appreciate that Defoe is a step-up in quality from Gayle)

The deal he's on at Sunderland is too good to compete with. His wages are good, and Sunderland won't let him go for a small sum, not when he's scoring goals and likely to be a major force for them if they want to stay up.
