Inspired by the reference to Cinatras in the 'Lottery' thread, what are you best, most treasured or most embarrassing memories of Croydon nightlife?

I remember seeing a man 'soil himself' at Reflex.

I remember the good old days of 'bothering' women at the Blue Orchid.

Po Na Na's was great on Thursdays.

The indie nights at the Gun on Thursdays were awesome.

Not quite Croydon but The Orchid Ballroom Purley in the mid sixties, the Croydon Bowl in Tamworth Road, and Under The Olive Tree coffee bar in South Croydon where we used to meet the "young ladies"from Coloma Convent School,Croydon was an ok place to be in those days. Wish I still had my Vespa.

Sunday night gigs at the Greyhound (which later became the Blue Orchid). First band I saw there was Queen when they released Seven Seas of Rye. Someone puked down the back of my trousers.

The Painted Wagon and the Railway Hotel in Purley were legendary, more like social clubs than pubs.

When I worked in Croydon many years ago I don't recall there being any nightlife at all and from memory Croydon closed at 7:00pm

Saw some good unknown bands in The Cartoon.

Remember some great nights at The Fairfield Hall including Genesis with Peter Gabriel.
Also saw some impressive performances at The Greyhound including a double bill of Bad Company and AC/DC.

Sunday nights in the late seventies used to be Lucania in Purley then on to the Greyhound for Greg Edwards & Co. Not forgetting Scamps back in the eighties too. Great memories

Hoof Hearted 29 Jan 16 11.51am

I worked for Noble Lowndes in 1979/80 in a skyscraper just off Wellesley Road.

I used to go to lunch with a work colleague Steve Cooper, another Palace fan a bit younger than me. We both went next door to the British Rail building for a free lunch (we just bluffed our way into the building, restaurant and helped ourselves!).

Then we went to a bar in George Street for a couple of pints and play the fruit machine. Happy Days.

One night we fancied a beer after work and went to our "favourite" bar.... one pint led to another and before we knew it, it was nearly 8pm and the bar clientele had changed!

It was a Gay Bar..... kin 'ell we supped our beers and left with haste hoping no one had fancied us, or thought we were an item!

Haven't been to any of the places mentioned by the OP but going back in time Saturday morning disco at the Top Rank just below where Mark and Jeremy live. The Underground, Shireffs, The Swamp (Coliseum), Watertown Xmas work parties, The Cartoon (Buddy Curtess), Gary Numan and Bill Withers at Fairfield and loads more.

Something tragic yet highly enjoyable about that lot. Worst thing to happen were one or two punch ups. All par for the course.

Seems like the best music gigs were before my time at The Greyhound and The Star. Some proper legends played at those places.
