Tragically snatched from us and at such a tender age.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

A brief encounter with Mr M you would approve of. In the early 1980s I had the pleasure of being in a Swiss cable car with him and he was smoking a pipe. A fellow passenger complained to him and asked him to put his pipe out.

Cliff politely explained that there was no sign in the carriage which said that smoking wasn't allowed and he had no intention of wasting a pipebowl of good tobacco unless someone was prepared to arrest him. No one did.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand!

My opinions may have changed, but not the fact that I am right.

So basically you're saying he was a bit of a cnut, who didn't care about other people's health worries but was polite about it?

All I remember of him was he used to host "Tonight" a dreadfully boring programme on BBC from 1957 to 1965 when I was aged 3 to 11. My dad had it on every night whilst my brothers and sisters my mum and myself were expected to sit quietly in the room bored out of our brains.

I think he also did a holiday programme, but the effect he had on me as a young kid meant I refused to watch anything he ever did.

Still RIP Cliff.... I hope your pipe didn't cause any fatalities for passive smokers unable to escape your smoke.
