How do you get sent off before the match?

Glad they looked at the penalty / red card rule, that needed changing

This is the link to the rule changes from IFAB. It is not posted on the FIFA website. IFAB will have new website in May (theifab.com) and that's where the laws will be available. This link is working through the link in the skysports article that Willo posted.

The one we've all been waiting for:

Announced on Thursday, the new laws also state the ball will also be able to move in any direction from kick-off, rather than only move forward.

Optimistic as ever

Interesting, so you won't need 2 players to kick off? You could arguably hoof back to your keeper

In the pub, I heard some chaps advocating that in the event of a penalty shoot-out after extra-time, any players who were named in the squad (Including those who were substituted) should be allowed to take a penalty, rather than just those who are on the field of play at the end of extra time and this applies to goalkeepers as well in terms of facing penalties.

They were saying that managers pre-empting extra-time have to reshuffle their team solely to ensure the best penalty takers/goalkeepers are on the field of play at the end of ET.

The "Joey Barton Rule".

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

If you think about it, it's a disadvantage to have to push the ball towards the opposition while having no one there to receive it. To counter this, teams kicking off have to put two players right on top of the ball, giving them a tactical disadvantage (albeit a small one).

Taking it further, I'd like to see players being able to take free kicks to themselves, like in rugby. It's crazy that a player - usually the one carrying the ball - is fouled and then is further punished by having to give up the ball to a teammate. Even in quick take situations, a teammate is required.

Think of the alternative. Wilf is flying down the wing and is scythed down by the full back. There is no immediate advantage so the ref blows for the foul. Wilf gets up first and takes a quick free kick but, instead of needing a teammate, he just continues his run while the full back struggles to get back goal side. So much more fair than the current rule.

Same with corners: let the corner-taker dribble the ball out if he so chooses. Short corners are the only way currently that a team can take this option but it means taking two players out of the box, giving the defending team a numerical advantage (also, teams often get caught offside when the two short corner takers try to exchange passes).

ETA: Even on regular "put it in the mixer" corners, the defending team has a numerical advantage. They don't have to cover the corner taker if he has no one to pass to, so the defending team has an extra defender to help repel the attack. If the corner taker could dribble the ball out from the corner, a defender would have to go over to over this, evening up the numbers in the middle.
